Mayor Andrew Swaby's Statement on Vending Enforcement

We all recognize that life in downtown Kingston is driven in large measure by the people who work there every day, particularly our vendors. They are an essential part of the city’s economic and social fabric. However, when carts, stalls, and tents obstruct roadways and impede traffic, it creates serious challenges for everyone.

We must also consider emergency situations, when someone falls ill or a fire breaks out, and ambulances or fire units are unable to gain access. These are concerns that have been repeatedly brought to our attention by the police and other emergency services.

Let me be clear: our intention is not to punish anyone. The measures being implemented along Orange Street, following extensive consultations, are aimed at creating greater public order in a way that benefits vendors, shop owners, and shoppers alike. Vendors must see themselves as partners in this solution. A more orderly environment will encourage customers who have stayed away because of congestion, limited parking, or safety concerns to return to downtown.

Clear roadways mean safer streets, easier movement, and greater economic opportunity for all. Order and safety do not undermine opportunity, they create it. I therefore urge everyone to cooperate so that downtown Kingston can become more vibrant, safer, and more welcoming for all who live, work, and do business there.

His Worship the Mayor of Kingston

Councillor Andrew A. Swaby, JP
