We must address the growing proliferation of signs along our roadways, at intersections and in other areas where they should not be placed. Excessive and improperly positioned signs, such as those seen at Matilda’s Corner, West Kings House Road and Constant Spring Road and other areas, can affect motorists’ visibility, obstruct sidewalks and create difficulties for persons with disabilities using our public spaces.

The law provides for sterile areas, or no-sign zones, where the placement of signs is restricted. Beginning October 1, 2026, the KSAMC will strengthen the management of these areas and erect “Sterile Area” signs to clearly identify designated locations and remind the public that signs should not be placed there.

Of particular concern is the proliferation of party signs, as promoters are not complying with the requirement to remove these signs within three days of the event. The KSAMC is currently considering measures aimed at improving compliance with this requirement and ensuring that party signs do not remain along our roadways and public spaces long after the events have ended.

Maintaining clear and orderly public spaces cannot be the responsibility of the KSAMC alone. Businesses, organizations, political representatives and members of the public all have a responsibility to respect the law and our shared public spaces. Whether a party sign, commercial advertisement or other form of signage, once an area has been designated as sterile, that designation must be respected.

This is not simply an issue of aesthetics. It is about maintaining clear visibility for motorists, ensuring that sidewalks remain accessible, particularly for persons with disabilities, and creating public spaces that are safe and functional for everyone. The KSAMC will continue its efforts through sensitization, clear identification of sterile areas and enforcement, while encouraging a culture of compliance and respect for our laws even when enforcement officers are not present.
