Office Of The Mayor

The Beautiful City of Kingston (Home of the KSAMC):

is pregnant with a rich cultural heritage, Kingston is blessed with a number of historical sites, vacation ‘hot spots’ and a haven for day and night entertainment.

This includes the imposing Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Cathedral, the historic Ward Theatre and the famous National Stadium, stomping ground of Jamaica’s world renowned athletes.

The affairs of the Council are managed by full time administrative staff responsible for policy implementation and a Political Directorate responsible for policy formulation.

Mayor's Attire

The Mayor’s attire includes:

●  a white lace jabot (worn around the neck)

Parish Council Funds

How is the Parish Council funded and what is the budget ?
The Parish Council is funded through Property Tax received as well as Motor Vehicle Licensing

How is the Mayor Elected

The Mayor must first be elected as a Councillor, by eligible citizens of Jamaica at the Local Government Elections. Depending on the outcome of the Local Government election, the party that has the majority votes will govern the Parish Council for a period of four (4) years. The Councillors from the majority will elect among themselves, the Councillor they deem fit to represent them as Mayor.

The role of the Mayor includes being the Head of the political arm of the Council. The Political Directorate is made up of Councillors, headed by the Mayor who chairs the Council and is responsible for determining and implementing policies.  

Parish Council Amount

How many Parish Councils are there? 
There are fourteen (14) Parish Councils, one for each parish, except for Kingston & St. Andrew which is merged into one (1), hence Kingston & St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC); and the parish of St. Catherine which is divided into two(2) Councils, Portmore Municipal Corporation and St. Catherine Municipal Corporation.

Which Parish Council is the largest and why?
The Kingston & St. Andrew Municipal Corporation is the largest Council in Jamaica. It has forty (40) divisions. The KSAMC is the largest parish council not only because it is responsible for the Capital City, but it also the largest and most densely populated political area in the island.
